Turning Over a New Leaf
In 2004 Ty Nant took possession of an additional 200 acres of forestry. This evergreen conifer forest was planted over 30 years ago and was due for felling. A plantation of this type is not good news for wildlife as the year round dark canopy and acidic needles don’t allow for shrubs or wildflower growth.
We decided to replant with a broadleaf wood which will have a high canopy, young trees, climbers shrubs and an herbaceous layer. Eventually the silence of the conifer wood will be replaced with bird song and insect activity and you will find butterflies, primroses, wild garlic, badgers, purple orchids and red campion.
The first 6 hectares of the new wood have been cleared and replanted with oak, willow, rowan alder and woody shrubs.
Advice and assistance was provided by The Forestry Commission of Wales.
Tilhill Forestry Management Service Llandovery carried out the replanting.
